THE COUNTRY’s information and communication technology (ICT) sectors should develop more technologies that meet international standards, while the government needs to have clear policies on ICT develop-ment, in order to compete in Southeast Asia, a government official and an industry analyst said.
Last week, Zhao Houlin, a senior official of the United Nation’s International Telecommunication Union, said that Vietnam is fast catching up with the Philippines.
In an e-mail late last week, Vincent R. Altez of industry analyst XMG Global, Inc., agreed that Vietnam is catching up with the Philippines and has become a competitor in this field.
Mr. Altez said that, based on the World Economic Forum’s 2008-2009 Networked Readiness Index, Vietnam was in the 70th place, 15 positions higher than the Philippines. “Such was a big accomplishment for Vietnam, considering that in 2006-2007 survey, Vietnam landed 82nd.”
